The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Lord Vishnu. It is the first and foremost among the 108 Divya Desams, the holy abodes of Lord Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, this koil is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil literature canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th-9th centuries CE.
The temple is also well known for its architectural grandeur. Its ornate gateway tower is the second tallest gopuram in the world. Known as theRajagopuram (the royal temple tower), it rises from the base area of around 13 cents (32500 sq ft) and goes up to 196 feet (60 m), moving up in eleven progressively smaller tiers. The annual 21 day chariot festival conducted during the month of Margazhi (Dec-Jan) attracts lot of visitors.
